All About Your Prostate

What
is the prostate?
The prostate is a gland found in males that is located between
the bladder and the penis in the pelvis. It surrounds part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body.
It starts as a small gland in boys and grows in size when testosterone levels increase. It grows to about the size of a walnut in adulthood.
What does it do?
The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. It produces the fluid that makes up part of the semen,
along with the sperm cell and other glandular fluids. This fluid also lubricates the urethra which helps prevent infection
in the tube.
It also plays a role in urinary functions and hormone metabolism, which is needed to develop secondary male characteristics like facial hair.
How does it affect your other body functions?

The muscles of your gland contract, which help open or close the urethra
up to the bladder, thus closing the bladder during ejaculation. This contraction also helps push semen into the urethra during orgasm. Likewise, this muscle contraction helps regulate urine flow.
When can a person have problems with their prostate?

It’s rare for young males to have problems with their prostate at an early age. The prostate gland continues to grow
for most of a man’s life, and it does not usually cause problems until later. Symptoms for prostate diseases usually appear in your 50s, but factors such as obesity, family history, lack of physical activity, and other diseases can increase your risk of having prostate problems.
